Champlain Bridge architect Poul Ove Jensen on replacing Canada's busiest bridge

Danish bridge architect Poul Ove Jensen has been tapped by the federal government and engineering firm Arup Canada Inc., to build Montreal's new Champlain Bridge — also known as Canada's busiest span. The federal government announced that the new bridge would be built by 2018.

Le «Musée de verre» restera caché

Le gigantesque iceberg dissimulant la verrière du Musée des beaux-arts du Canada (MBAC), à Ottawa, restera là pour encore un bon moment. Problèmes de construction, fuites, défaillance des joints d'étanchéité: la structure de verre du MBAC, devenue depuis sa construction, il y a plus d'un quart de siècle, l'un des symboles de la capitale canadienne, a déjà connu de meilleurs jours. C'est pourquoi le Musée a entamé au début de l'année des travaux évalués à 10 millions de dollars.

'Super beam' installed in Montreal Champlain Bridge repair

Crews installed a giant 75-tonne "super beam" after a huge crack was discovered in an underlying girder on Montreal's problem-plagued Champlain Bridge. It was the first time such a support girder was needed but the Crown corporation managing Montreal bridges, Les Ponts Jacques Cartier et Champlain Incorporée (PJCCI), was prepared for the eventuality.

The requirements for this project called for the design of a small home that would respond to the evolving life needs of a young couple, with two small boys, who intend to live their lives here for the next half century. A significant spatial challenge from the start of the project was that the maximum allowable width of the house could only be twenty-four feet.

Si vous êtes nés dans les années 1970 ou 1980, vous avez probablement passé plusieurs heures de votre enfance avec ce jouet, qui s'est écoulé à des millions d'exemplaires à travers le monde depuis sa création. Cela a été le cas de l'artiste Javier Lloret qui, dans un élan de nostalgie, a décidé de réinventer l'expérience du cube Rubik d'une façon assez particulière. Il a transposé ce jeu populaire en un format géant et interactif sur un bâtiment de forme cubique dans la ville de Linz en Autriche.

Glebe Residence / Batay-Csorba Architects

Canadian based practice Batay Csorba Architects have recently completed the Glebe Residence, a full interior renovation and addition to the 1890's structure in Ottawa, Canada. The two story existing rectilinear brick massing was retained providing a direct reference to its past, while a new third story and three story rear addition clad in contrasting black metal panels cantilever and pivot around an existing historic sugar maple tree located on the site.

The house bridges between two bedrock outcrops parallel to the sea, thereby framing the approach to the sea under its "belly." One enters at either end from the two rocks. This is a floating lantern of wood-a pure man-made object calling attention to the undulating natural topography of the glaciated landscape. The primary form of the house is deconstructed to create a wide variety of indoor-outdoor conditions.

Dawn of a new era for London hotel owned by the UAE

In a discreet side room of the genteel Lanesborough hotel at London's Hyde Park Corner, fixtures, fittings and furnishings are being sold at a pace of 600 or more lots a day. The interiors of the hotel owned by the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority are being auctioned ahead of its temporary closure for a complete refurbishment of the building.
