3 Civic Plaza aims to take the suburb out of Surrey
The Globe and Mail    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
One of the highest points in the Lower Mainland, the site of the new Bing Thom-designed library and the city hall designed jointly by Kasian and Moriyama & Teshima is part of a brave new experiment in city-building. It's currently a construction zone bordered by the SkyTrain and built on the bones of the kind of suburban retail and commercial real estate that still surrounds it. But in a few short years, developer Sean Hodgins of Century Group hopes it will become a new urban village. In fact, his 3 Civic Plaza — the biggest mixed-use project south of the Fraser and flanked by the library and city hall — is the first substantial residential response to Surrey's new urbanization plan spearheaded by Mayor Dianne Watts: two towers on a podium that will contain a hotel, office space and a residential building, and complement the city's plans to densify, increase walkability and improve public transit access. DCYSA Architecture — La firme devient maintenant NEUF Architect(e)s
Kollectif    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
More

Calgary's skyline heading higher with tower taller than The Bow
Calgary Herald    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Calgary's skyline will again be redefined in a few years, with a new downtown skyscraper designed to stand even taller than the Bow. Brookfield Properties submitted this week plans for a 56-storey, 247-metre tower to rise on the site of the former Herald building, along with a 178-metre similarly styled tower on the same block. A stylized box whose edges curve and taper upward to its crown, it won't outshoot the Norman Foster-designed Bow for iconic architecture. But it will, by 11 metres, lay to rest the Encana/Cenovus highrise's bragging rights as tallest building in Western Canada. The project, variously called '225 Sixth' and 'Brookfield Place' in the development permit, replaces Brookfield's proposal for a simpler square tower at 1st Street and 7th Avenue S.W. More

Winnipeg's Met Theatre set to reopen
CBC News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Winnipeg's Metropolitan Theatre is finally ready to reopen and embrace the next chapter in its 93-year history. After spending the past 25 years shuttered and with an uncertain future, the newly-named Metropolitan Entertainment Centre will open its doors for an exclusive, invitation-only evening gala. Vacant since 1987, the Met was purchased in 2006 by the Canad Inns hotel chain, which had considered some type of entertainment venue featuring a Manitoba rock and roll hall of fame. Canad Inns has invested $20 million to return the building to its former glory. "I think the ingenuity of this is that the main portion of the Met really has been restored to the grandeur of a bygone era," Canad Inns CEO Paul Robson said. More

More

Planning for all people encourages mixed-use growth
Inside Toronto    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Future city development should reflect the needs of drivers and non-drivers alike in order to avoid 'planning failures' like the Peanut Plaza in Don Mills, said a panel of urban design experts. The Construct Canada panel, made up of architects Clifford Korman, David Butterworth and city councillor Shelley Carroll, encouraged the audience of peers attending the trade show to build projects accessible to pedestrians, cyclists and transit users, as well as drivers. Though it was constructed in the 1960s, Peanut Plaza is still considered a culturally vibrant community hub situated near schools, residences and recreational facilities. More
