RAIC honours His Highness the Aga Khan with 2013 Gold Medal

The Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) is pleased to announce His Highness the Aga Khan as the 2013 recipient of the RAIC Gold Medal — its highest honour. The selection of His Highness marks the first time in more than 30 years that a non-architect has been chosen to receive the Gold Medal, and recognizes the Aga Khan's extraordinary achievements in using architecture as an instrument to further peaceful and sustainable community development around the world.

Cette médaille est la distinction la plus importante décernée par l'IRAC et pour la première fois en plus de 30 ans, elle est décernée à une personne qui n'est pas architecte, en reconnaissance des réalisations extraordinaires de l'Aga Khan qui utilise l'architecture comme instrument de développement communautaire pacifique et durable partout dans le monde.

Architect Frank Gehry says there are only two buildings in his hometown worth saving: Old City Hall and Osgoode Hall. Everything else is fair game to be torn down, Mr. Gehry suggested to Toronto and East York Community Council. "I don't know whether we should be designating heritage buildings," said Mr. Gehry, who was born in Toronto. "I think you should preserve [Old] City Hall because I used to go there when I was a kid."

Dalhousie University plans construction of new health building

Prix d'excellence en architecture 2013 : Les lauréats de la 27 e édition récompensés

L'Ordre des architectes du Québec (OAQ) a dévoilé les lauréats de la 27e édition des Prix d'excellence en architecture (PEA) 2013 au cours d'une cérémonie de remise de prix au Centre des sciences de Montréal. Avec 187 candidatures reçues, le jury, présidé par l'architecte français de renom Jacques Ferrier a présélectionné 57 projets. Les lauréats 2013 des PEA se sont distingués par la qualité et la créativité de leurs œuvres architecturales.

Substances of concern: Why material transparency matters

Architect Peter John Stokes brought heritage to life

It was the late 1970s, and Peter John Stokes was contacted by a student of urban and regional planning at the University of Waterloo. Mr. Stokes was running a private practice as a consulting restoration architect out of his home off the main street in Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON. The student, Paul Dilse, was interested in heritage buildings but finding few resources to help him learn about Ontario's historical structures. This inspiring encounter proved to Mr. Dilse that he, too, could make a living in the field.
