YWCA Elm Centre shows innovative side of green building
Design Build Source    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Canadian architects and cities have been working to overcome recent criticism for their modern architectural efforts. With architecture in many major cities amounting to scads of glass-clad skyscrapers, architects have looked for alternatives to such buildings, which have been labeled as 'style over substance' for offering a stylized metropolitan look and not much more. Many critics of Canadian architecture, however, forget the green building sector and the unique and innovative ways in which green buildings deviate from the conventional modern look and function. Toronto's highly-acclaimed YWCA Elm Centre has proven to be just such a building. The centre offers 150 beds to women and children working to overcome social factors such as having a low income while being socially, economically and environmentally sustainable. More

Canadian firm's green walls filter, freshen workplace air
The Globe and Mail    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Alan Darlington once worked on research at the University of Guelph that used plants to produce fresh air on spacecraft, with the goal of enabling manned, long-distance space missions. His project turned into an innovative business opportunity with applications on Earth — and it transformed Dr. Darlington into a chief executive officer. At the centre of his research and business, Nedlaw Living Walls Inc., is the ability of plants and the microorganisms that live on their roots to filter pollutants out of stale air, providing fresh air that is healthy and pleasant for humans. Nedlaw designs, manufactures and installs green biowalls that purify air for buildings. Since its start more than 10 years ago, about the same time as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency identified indoor air quality as one of the top five threats to human health, Nedlaw has become the leading supplier of living biowalls, said Dr. Darlington, who is the company's founder and president. Eco-district may help build downtown Ottawa buzz
Ottawa Citizen    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A stretch of central Ottawa might soon be defined by its dedication to environmental sustainability. Separate efforts are underway to create what are known as eco-districts — one in the western portion of downtown Ottawa, and another on Chaudière and Victoria islands on the Ottawa River just north of downtown. Eco-districts are distinguished by a commitment among residents, businesses and developers of an area to do things in ways that minimize environmental impact in a measurable way. That applies to things such as the way buildings are constructed, transportation, energy usage and waste disposal. In Canada, Vancouver and Victoria are among the cities with areas considered eco-districts, according to the Portland Sustainability Institute. Portland, Ore., is seen as one of the leading cities in this movement and recently hosted the EcoDistricts Summit, featuring urban experts from around the world. More
