5468796 Architecture wins Professional Prix de Rome for Table for 12: A Conversation in Architecture

The Canada Council for the Arts has awarded 5468796 Architecture the $50,000 Professional Prix de Rome prize for their project Table for 12: A Conversation in Architecture, which will allow hosts from eight cities to set the table for informal conversations about architecture. The aim of the project is to promote Canadian architecture, identify synergies between cities and provide opportunities for global exchange.

Ground breaks on $54 million U of T Jackman law building

The faculty of law at the University of Toronto has broken ground on a major expansion and renovation at its Queen's Park site that includes construction of the $54 million Jackman law building. Designed by Hariri Pontarini Architects and B+H Architects, the new multi-storey wing on Queen's Park Crescent increases teaching and learning space by 50 per cent, to 66,000 square feet.

Burlington Bridgewater site set to transform

Construction to begin on new McMaster flagship building

Construction is slated to get underway at Hamilton, ON's McMaster University on a flagship, 150-000-square-foot humanities and social sciences building, the first new facility built for the two faculties in decades. Designed by Toronto's CS&P Architects, the five-storey L.R. Wilson Hall will incorporate new "active" learning classrooms while providing a host of formal and informal learning/studying environments for the faculties' undergraduate and graduate student body.

St. Catharines construction to create dynamic downtown

BIG unveils 'Telus Sky' Tower in Calgary

In an attempt to transform Calgary's corporate-centric downtown into a walkable, dynamic community, TELUS has commissioned BIG to design a mixed-use skyscraper in the heart of the Canadian city. Known as TELUS Sky, the 750,000 square foot tower is designed to "seamlessly accommodate the transformation from working to living as the tower takes off from the ground to reach the sky."

Skyscraper builders reach for the stars once again

The newest skyscraper rising in London, the 48-story Leadenhall Building, will be the second-tallest office building in the city's financial district when completed next year. The tower's size as well as the tapered-glass design have drawn praise throughout Britain. Yet, by some international standards, the Leadenhall, which is a joint venture between developers British Land Co. and Canada's Oxford Properties, could be considered run-of-the-mill.
