Festival of Architecture 2014 set to begin
Journal of Commerce
The Journal of Commerce will be covering the Royal Architectural Institute Canada's (RAIC) 2014 Festival of Architecture in Winnipeg, MB. The annual conference brings together architects from across the country. It focuses on architects' contributions to the improvement of today's world, the built environment, sustainable urban development and social commitment, as well as the importance of architecture.

David Mirvish to keep Princess of Wales Theatre in revised design for King West condo towers

David Mirvish has had a change of heart when it comes to demolishing the Princess of Wales Theatre and other buildings he owns on King Street West to construct skyscrapers designed by Frank Gehry, the Toronto-born architect. Mr. Mirvish, the theatre impresario, unveiled Mr. Gehry’s new plans in miniature model form. The plans include stripping the original triple-tower plan down to two towers and leaving the Princess of Wales Theatre, the Royal Alexandra Theatre, one historic building and one façade intact.

De Montréal à Vancouver, une grande majorité des tours d'habitation ne se résume qu'à des boîtes de verre rectangulaires ou arrondies, parsemées de balcons ici et là. Très peu réussissent à sortir du lot pour créer des symboles forts identitaires pour une métropole, au même titre qu'Habitat 67 et les pyramides olympiques.

CMHR recognized with two design awards

The Canadian Museum for Human Rights and its builders and designers are being presented with two design awards by the Ontario Division of the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction. The Design Awards of Excellence highlight the remarkable collaboration that has taken place between the general contractor, designers, consultants and sub-trades during the construction of the CMHR. The institute noted that more than 5,400 tonnes of steel was also used in building the museum, which is slated to open in September.

L'agrandissement de la bibliothèque Saul Bellow a fait l'objet en 2011 du premier concours d'architecture au Québec devant ouvrir sur un « processus de conception intégrée ». Trois ans plus tard, alors que le projet lauréat, par Chevalier et Morales, est en cours de construction, il est tentant de revenir sur la manière dont les architectes ont relevé les défis présentés par l'association de ces processus qualitatifs exploitant des moyens fort différents.

Winnipeg: City of architectural delights

In the few decades leading up to the year 1914, Winnipeg transformed itself from an isolated trading post to a brash, cosmopolitan metropolis. When a new train station needed to be built, the architects of New York's Grand Central were hired. When the Union Bank needed a new building at the bend in Main Street, they constructed Canada's first skyscraper, the tallest in the Dominion.

Les quatre finalistes seront annoncés le 26 juin et le lauréat sera connu fin septembre. Ce concours est approuvé par l'OAQ. Une exposition sur les concepts finalistes est prévue.

Stantec Architecture and KPMB Architects selected for University of Lethbridge's Destination Project

The University of Lethbridge Board of Governors has chosen the firms Stantec Architecture and KPMB Architects, in joint venture, to lead the design process of its new science and academic building and energy/utility centre; key elements of the transformational University of Lethbridge Destination Project. In its agreement with the University of Lethbridge, Stantec Architecture/KPMB Architects will undertake a comprehensive consultation process with university and community stakeholders, as well as complete the design phase of the project.
