Politique nationale de l'architecture: l'IRAC appuie l'Ordre

L'Institut royal d'architecture du Canada (IRAC) appuie l'Ordre dans sa revendication d'une politique nationale d'architecture pour le Québec. Dans une lettre, le président de l'IRAC, Wayne DeAngelis, dit soutenir cette démarche « sans réserve », invitant du même coup les ordres des autres provinces canadiennes à l'imiter.

RAIC to name over 30 members as new fellows among its ranks

The Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) is planning to name more than 30 of its members from across Canada as fellows of the organization in recognition of their outstanding achievements. The new fellows will be inducted at the College of Fellows Convocation, which will take place during the Festival of Architecture in Winnipeg from May 28 to 31.

OAA Awards honour three additional projects at recent conference

The annual Ontario Association of Architects (OAA) Celebration of Excellence Awards showcased the best in architectural design and innovation by Ontario architects. Fifteen new buildings in Toronto, Ottawa, Winnipeg, Bracebridge, Hamilton, Brampton, Midhurst, and Halifax were distinguished in this year's Design Excellence category. The 2014 award-winning projects reflect their environment and surroundings and invite the local community in.

Nova Scotia: Let in the light: Canning architect honoured for Sandy Cove reno

Canning-area architect Lisa Tondino of Houdinidesign has just won a Lieutenant Governor's 2013 Citation in Architectural Design Award. The award recognizes a renovation of the Ritchie family's residence in Sandy Cove, Digby County. Tondino's adaption of a barn-like structure transformed it into a two-storey home. Designers Judy Obersi and Alex Bolen collaborated on the award-winning project.

Anyone can nominate their favourite structures and share their personal stories. We asked some British Columbians to tell us about the building that means the most to them. "The purpose of the contest is to recognize the impact and influence that buildings have had over the past 100 years," states the foundation.

'London's new emblem': Shard is named best skyscraper in the world

The Shard has been named the best skyscraper in the world after claiming first place in an international competition. The 306-metre tall building was praised by judges for its glass fragment-shape and sophisticated architecture. The building, which has become a significant part of the London skyline, won the Emporis Skyscraper Award after being chosen by an international panel of experts from more than 300 skyscrapers 100 metres or higher completed in the previous calendar year.

Plans in works for agricultural museum in Michigan with history displays, farm toy collection

A new agricultural museum in Michigan would include a collection of 6,000 farm toys as well as displays on the history of agriculture and agriculture technology, organizers said. Rhode Island-based architect Friedrich St. Florian, who designed the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C., showed a design concept recently for the Agricultural Awareness and Preservation Museum, The Daily Telegram of Adrian reported.

Stantec Architecture and KPMB Architects selected for University of Lethbridge's Destination Project

The University of Lethbridge Board of Governors has chosen the firms Stantec Architecture and KPMB Architects, in joint venture, to lead the design process of its new science and academic building and energy/utility centre; key elements of the transformational University of Lethbridge Destination Project. In its agreement with the University of Lethbridge, Stantec Architecture/KPMB Architects will undertake a comprehensive consultation process with university and community stakeholders, as well as complete the design phase of the project.

Canada: The Fogo Island Inn puts Newfoundland on the luxury travel map

It's a measure of Fogo Island Inn's improbable everything — place, owner, purpose, and architecture — that The Hotel Detective paid it a visit. The hotel is an X-shaped building, "a four-story box with a two-story box sticking through it." The black spruce exterior has been stained to a bone gray, giving the hotel a spectral appearance at certain times of day.
