Architecture festival hits Halifax in June

Architects from across Canada are poised to converge in Halifax June 5 to 8 for this year's Festival of Architecture. The event is being hosted by Architecture Canada/Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) in partnership with the Nova Scotia Association of Architects (NSAA). The theme of this year's conference, only the second to be held in Nova Scotia, is "The Value of Beauty — Integrity in Architecture."

La Fondation de l'IRAC a le plaisir d'annoncer l'attribution de la bourse d'études du Conseil du bâtiment durable 2013 à Sheida Shahi pour son mémoire de maîtrise à l'Université de Waterloo intitulé Adaptable Tower Neighbourhoods. Le jury a souligné que le mémoire « englobe les aspects techniques de la rénovation des bâtiments et tient compte de ses dimensions sociales ».

Eco-friendly corridor to enhance Sudbury's downtown

A plan to integrate green space into downtown Sudbury, offering eco-friendly transport options while enhancing the downtown's aesthetics, is set to get underway this year. Part of the city's downtown master plan approved last August, the $3.7 million Elgin Street Greenway is a one-kilometre corridor that will run alongside the rail lands, incorporating greenery alongside space for pedestrians and cyclists.

Green roofs, living walls springing up around Windsor

Spring has sprung in Windsor. That means greener grass — and greener roofs and walls, too. According to the Green Roofs for Healthy Cities Association, there has been a 24 per- cent growth rate among industries installing green roofs. Joe Passa is a Windsor architect who has designed green roofs. He said they have their advantages.

Hospital uses power of architecture to promote healing

Gerry Latham has worked in a lot of hospitals in her 40 years as a nurse and administrator. She has seen the strain that old hospital buildings put on nurses, who spend too much of their time walking from one supply room to another, and on patients, whose already frail health is tested by living in rooms with one to three other patients, by the noise of the hospital, by infections. Experiments in hospital design are not unusual in North America, as the never-ending demand for new health-care facilities fuses with the green movement in architecture.

The Ontario Association of Architects Awards Gala puts the spotlight on open and inviting designs

The annual Ontario Association of Architects (OAA) Celebration of Excellence Awards showcased the best in architectural design and innovation by Ontario architects. 15 new buildings in Toronto, Montreal, Los Angeles, Tel - Aviv, Waterloo, Sequin Township, and Vancouver were distinguished in this year's "Design Excellence" category. Entry criteria were expanded to include projects designed by Ontario architects located outside the province. "Opening the awards to national and international projects reflects the global impact Ontario architects are making," says OAA President, Bill Birdsell.
