Architects from 12 Canadian cities named 2014 Fellows of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada

Thirty-four architects from across Canada have been named 2014 Fellows by the RAIC | Architecture Canada. The RAIC College of Fellows bestows fellowship in recognition of outstanding achievement. Criteria include design excellence, exceptional scholarly contribution or distinguished service to the profession or the community.

Athabasca University now offers online architecture program

Athabasca University (AU) and Architecture Canada | Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) have teamed up to launch an exciting new program for students who wish to become professional architects. The Bachelor of Science (Architecture) degree officially launched at the Art Gallery of Alberta recently. Athabasca University's architecture program is a flexible work-study program for students who pursue an alternate path to an architecture career.

Glacier Skywalk extends over Canada's Jasper National Park

Located at the heart of the Canadian Rockies, the 'Glacier Skywalk' forms a fully accessible observation platform presenting panoramic views across Sunwapta Valley. Conceived by Brewster Travel Canada and jointly developed by Sturgess Architecture and Read Jones Christoffersen Engineering, the walkway opens to the public in may 2014, three years after original designs were floated for the ambitious project.

Green building certifications show strong growth
Sourceable
The Canada Green Building Council said it certified 140 new LEED projects in the first quarter of 2014. Of those 140, 5 earned LEED Platinum, 47 earned LEED Gold, 50 earned LEED Silver, and 38 earned LEED Certified status. LEED certified projects now total 1631 in Canada. An additional 109 projects were registered to pursue certification through March 31, bringing the country's LEED total to 6423 projects registered and certified.

Manitoba theatre centre's unique design earns recognition

Don't be fooled by its post-modern, concrete-fortress appearance — it's really an intimate historic site where actors and audiences can get cozy together. And there's a plaque to prove it. The Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada unveiled a plaque commemorating the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre building as a national historic site.

The Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art (MOCCA) is calling for submissions that respond to the thematic of an upcoming exhibition, entitled TBD that will be on view in Toronto. The exhibition proposes that the definition of a museum is not fixed but rather "to be determined." By asking, "What is a contemporary art gallery?" the exhibition questions our fundamental assumptions concerning the role and importance of museums in society and their associated architectural forms.
