2015 RAIC architecture festival fosters a sense of community

The Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) hosts an annual festival of architecture with the purpose of uniting architects from across the country to network, continue their education with professional development courses, and to recognize excellence through various honours and awards ceremonies. The 2015 festival, hosted in conjunction with the Alberta Association of Architects (AAA), will take place in Calgary from June 3-6 at the Hyatt Regency hotel.

Esplanade reconfiguration in Montreal's Place des Arts underway

The Société de la Place des Arts in Montreal has started major work to complete the reconfiguration of its Esplanade, which is a main gathering place for millions of festivalgoers. The $34.2 million project will be completed in May 2018, and will be carried out in such a way as to allow planned cultural and artistic activities to continue to take place without interruption. The project was created by the Montreal architecture firm of Provencher Roy and was designed to showcase the existing buildings in the block bounded by Jeanne-Mance, Saint Urbain, and Saint Catherine streets, and De Maisonneuve Boulevard. Its design will preserve the unique sightline to Mount Royal.

L'école d'architecture de l'Université Laval offrira un doctorat en architecture à compter de l'automne 2015. L'établissement veut ainsi porter un regard critique sur l'architecture, alors que de grands défis sociaux et environnementaux se dessinent pour les années à venir. Le programme offrira deux champs de spécialisation : un champ Fabrication, davantage en lien avec des disciplines comme le génie mécanique, le génie informatique et le génie du bois, ainsi qu'un champ Milieux de vie, qui s'intéressera à des domaines tels le patrimoine bâti, la banlieue ou encore les paysages culturels.

Tree House development to take root in Toronto

Famed architect Moshe Safdie returns to Canada for Toronto waterfront project

In town to celebrate his first residential project in Canada since Habitat 67, Moshe Safdie is unfazed by the familiarity of it all. "Every city thinks its problems are unique," says the Israeli-born, Montreal-raised, Boston-based architect. "But when you work internationally, you realize that their issues are generic issues. Cities everywhere are intensifying. That means congestion. The growing difficulties of commuting are a global phenomenon."

West Coast Modernism put in context

The West Coast Modern House charts the development of residential Vancouver architecture from the post-war period through to contemporary practice. The book features over 50 homes designed by seminal West Coast architects such as Ron Thom. Arthur Erickson, Barry Downs and Fred Hollingsworth. Bellerby, a curator and gallery director for over 30 years, spoke to the North Shore News about some of the extensive research involved in putting the collection together.
