Calgary 'The Bow' in world top 15 spectacular buildings

The tallest office tower in Calgary has been included in a list of the world's 15 most spectacular corporate buildings. Completed last year and renowned for its crescent shape and view of the Bow River, EnCana Corporation and Cenovus Energy headquarters building The Bow was included in the list — which includes (in no particular order) the 15 most spectacular buildings based on innovative design, visual impact and function of significant corporate architecture as determined by a jury of building experts from Emporis, an international provider of building data.

University of Waterloo tops in design

University of Waterloo architecture and engineering students won first prize in the 2013 Evolve Sustainable Design Competition, receiving $5,000 and an opportunity to meet with some of Canada's top architecture professionals at B+H Architects. University of Waterloo students Renee Hum-Hsiao, Elaina Poleto, Keegan Steeper, Joanne Yau and Thomas Yuan received first prize for their design of an environmentally sustainable bank branch of the future.

Tim Hortons goes LEED in Hamilton

Tim Hortons opened its first LEED-certified restaurant in Hamilton, ON. The company plans to continue down the green path by registering 30 more LEED projects by the end of 2016. "We acknowledge we have an environmental impact in the communities we serve and we are committed to continuously improving our restaurant footprint, from how we source material, to how we use energy, to how we design our restaurants and manage our waste," said Tim Hortons' senior director.

Most universities now offer four-year environmental science programs at the undergraduate level and there are a wide range of two- and three-year environmental technology diploma programs offered through colleges and technical institutes. And increasingly, graduates with generalist degrees in science, economics and engineering are enrolling in one- or two-year postgraduate programs being offered in energy supply and sustainability, conservation, engineering and green architecture.

Promise, potential on the waterfront
Hamilton Spectator
Just as the city is about to take control of a key swath of land on the waterfront, its arm's-length development agency is moving forward with imminent plans for new buildings at the water's edge. The Hamilton Waterfront Trust has put out a call to the development community for proposals for three new buildings: One on the grassy area between the parking lot and the ice rink, a second between the Sarcoa restaurant and the rink, and a third on the eastern end of the former Discovery Centre.

Il venait de signer un contrat pour la conception de la nouvelle ville d'El-Ménia, un vaste projet d'aménagement urbain évalué à 2,4 milliards $. La firme qui porte son nom, une fourmilière d'architectes, de designers, d'urbanistes travaillant à Montréal, à Québec et ailleurs dans le monde, s'est taillé la première place lors d'un concours international «sur ce que devrait être la ville d'avenir en Algérie».
