Early-bird registration for 2014 RAIC Festival of Architecture in Winnipeg

Registration is now open for the 2014 RAIC Festival of Architecture, presented in association with the Manitoba Association of Architects. The Festival will take place from May 28-31, 2014 at the Fairmont Winnipeg Hotel, located at the corner of Portage Avenue and Main Street. Register before April 30 and qualify for the early-bird rate. Availability of courses, events and companion packages is first-come, first-served — so be sure to register soon.

A new Canadian prize: $100,000 for the best new building in the world

The Royal Architectural Institute of Canada and Raymond Moriyama are announcing the Moriyama RAIC International Prize — to be awarded every two years for a new building anywhere in the world. "The point is to raise the stature of RAIC internationally," says Mr. Moriyama, 84, from his home in Toronto, "and by doing so we should raise the stature of Canada architecturally and culturally — and then motivate Canadian architects to greater heights."

Henriquez Partners Architects revive Vancouver's historic York Theatre

The recent York Theatre renovation is the result of a decades-long struggle to save a historic community theatre from demolition. Originally built in 1913 as the Alcazar Theatre, the building changed identities numerous times over its storied 100-year history. Ten years after it first opened, it was purchased by the Vancouver Little Theatre Association.

Calgary's Uptown Theatre still at risk despite Barron Building's proposed historic designation

Historic designation of a downtown Calgary building won't protect its once-popular ground-level theatre that has its own roots in city history. The now-abandoned Uptown Stage and Screen (formerly Uptown Theatre), located in the 11-storey Barron Building on 6 Street SW and Stephen Avenue, was exempted from the province's notice of historic designation, paving the way for its possible demolition, according to Matthew Wangler, executive director of the province's Historic Resource Management Branch.

Six-storey wood buildings could be coming to Ontario this year as the provincial government moves forward on a proposal to make amendments to the Building Code. Currently, the Building Code permits construction of wood-frame buildings up to four storeys.

Tyler Sharp receives 2014 Young Architect Award from RAIC

The Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) has announced Tyler Sharp of Toronto as the recipient of its 2014 Young Architect Award. Sharp, 40, graduated from the Dalhousie School of Architecture in Halifax in 2002. While at Dalhousie, he completed a work term with Vancouver-based BattersbyHowat where he contributed to series of custom houses, including the award-winning Staehling Residence.
