Tyler Sharp receives 2014 Young Architect Award from RAIC

The Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) has announced Tyler Sharp of Toronto as the recipient of its 2014 Young Architect Award. Sharp, 40, graduated from the Dalhousie School of Architecture in Halifax in 2002. While at Dalhousie, he completed a work term with Vancouver-based BattersbyHowat where he contributed to series of custom houses, including the award-winning Staehling Residence.

RAIC recognizes MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple Architects with 2014 Architectural Firm Award

The Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) has announced MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple Architects as the recipient of its 2014 Architectural Firm or Practice Award. Founded in 1985 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple Architects has built a reputation for design excellence — from a modest fisherman's cottage on the Nova Scotia coast to the Canadian Chancery and Official Residence in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Antoine Predock and Bjarke Ingels to receive 2014 RAIC Honorary Fellowships

The Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) has selected two internationally renowned architects to receive its 2014 Honorary Fellowships. New Mexico-based Antoine Predock is the architect behind the Canadian Museum for Human Rights in Winnipeg, set to open in September 2014.

With changing demographics, the multigenerational house comes of age

Ramona Omidvar is part of a growing cohort of young professionals who expects to eventually share a home with her parents, as well as her two children, currently 2 and 5. The reason for blending the households isn't financial — both Omidvar and her husband, who asked not to be named, have good jobs, as do her parents. She worked with award-winning architecture firm Williamson Chong to contemporize the 2,760-square-foot Victorian to her taste — it's all crisp lines and fluid spaces.

Winnipeg firm perfects doing more for less

Since coming into existence just seven years ago, the Winnipeg firm known as 5468796 Architecture — 546, for short — has been deluged by awards, honours, fellowships and favourable write-ups in the building art's national and international press. The busy office run by co-founders Johanna Hurme and Sasa Radulovic is widely regarded as Canada's premiere emerging architectural practice — even though its designs have been realized, up to now, no farther than a stone’s throw from the intersection of Portage and Main.
