Arctic Adaptations: Nunavut at 15 selected to represent Canada at the 2014 Venice Biennale in Architecture

The Canada Council for the Arts and the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) announced that Arctic Adaptations: Nunavut at 15 has been selected through a national juried competition to represent Canada at the 2014 Venice Biennale in Architecture. The exhibition will be organized and curated by Lateral Office of Toronto.

Architects change recycling habits with design

Architects and designers may be on the frontlines of the war against garbage, suggests a new University of British Columbia study, which found that people in "green buildings" are more likely to act in an environmentally responsible manner regardless of their past habits. A group of UBC psychology students used a hidden camera to record other students' recycling decisions at two Vancouver campus cafeterias: the Centre for Interactive Research on Sustainability, a so-called "living laboratory" for sustainability research, and the Student Union Building, a relic from the late 1960s.

Federal budget delivers $70 billion for infrastructure over 10 years

The federal government has committed to $70 billion in infrastructure funding over 10 years through both current and new initiatives, it announced in the 2013 budget. This commitment includes a new $14 billion Building Canada Fund to support major economic projects that have national, regional and local significance. This will replace the original seven-year Building Canada plan, which expires in March 2014.

No hospital in New Zealand has been built out of timber, and the Christchurch rebuild was a "game-changer" according to a leading architect. Canterbury's new health facilities should have more timber to enhance health and wellbeing, according to Tye Farrow, who has been given the First World Architect Award for Advancing Health and Humanity using the medium of health and architecture by Stockholm-based World Congress on Design and Health.

L'IRAC
L'Institut royal d'architecture du Canada (IRAC) a le plaisir d'annoncer qu'il décerne son Prix du jeune architecte 2013 à Maxime-Alexis Frappier, MIRAC. M. Frappier a obtenu son diplôme de l'École d'architecture de l'Université de Montréal en 2000. En 2006, il a été l'un des cofondateurs de l'agence ACDF ARCHITECTURE, qui compte aujourd'hui 35 professionnels. Il travaille sur des projets à la grandeur du Canada et en Asie et il a remporté plusieurs prix, dont une Médaille du Gouverneur général en architecture. Ses réalisations sont publiées dans plus de 30 magazines internationaux.

New guidelines aim to improve Toronto Green Roofs and the city

Toronto's City Planning division has produced a new resource called Guidelines for Biodiverse Green Roofs, detailing best practices for promoting biodiversity on green roofs in Toronto. Green roofs provide insulation for buildings, improve air quality and the quality of water runoff, and cut down on the urban heat-island effect. New commercial, institutional and residential development with a minimum Gross Floor Area of 2,000m2 in Toronto require a portion of the roofs to be green.
