Architectural services jobs in Canada have consistently outpaced the U.S.

The architectural and construction industries co-exist in a bound-at-the-hip relationship. Design work precedes on-site activity levels. Therefore, Statistics Canada's recently published service bulletin entitled Architectural Services (Catalogue no. 63-245-X) provides interesting reading. The document combines financial results for both architectural firms involved in building construction and landscape architects, although the former is by far the larger of the two.

Simons unveils major art installation by Canadian artist and architect Philip Beesley

Simons, the renowned family-owned fashion retailer from Quebec City, will unveil a permanent in-store art installation called Simons Aurora at its new West Edmonton Mall location soon. Designed by Canadian artist and architect Philip Beesley, Simons Aurora is a canopy of crystalline columns that uses sensory mechanisms to respond to human movement, creating a gently swelling and rippling ocean of light.

Restoration project mixes old with the new

The 275-foot tower of St. Michael's Cathedral used to be the tallest structure in Toronto. Though the city around it has changed, some of the methods used in the tower's restoration are the same as when it was originally under construction in 1867. "We try to keep that tradition. We don't try to make shortcuts. This is our history. We are a young country here but we need to preserve our history here too," said master stone carver Lawrence Voaides, president of Traditional Cut Stone Ltd.

Prouesse technique, l'espace Aimé-Césaire de Gennevilliers (Hauts-de-Seine) est une boîte de béton lacérée d'entailles qui peuvent atteindre 11 mètres de long. Pour réaliser ce bâtiment, conçu par l'architecte Rudy Ricciotti, l'entreprise générale Demathieu Bard a adapté ses méthodes de travail.

Wood industry pushing for reform

Renewing Montreal's heritage buildings

In Montreal, the buildings targeted for adaptive re-use tend to be concentrated in previously industrial areas, such as the Old Port, the Lachine Canal and Griffintown — indicating a shift from manufacturing to a service-based economy.
